147 Newly Appointed Bishops Gather in Rome for Annual Vatican Formation Course

- A total of 147 newly appointed bishops from five continents gathered in Rome during September
for the annual Vatican formation course for newly appointed bishops.
The formation programme, co-organised by the Dicastery for Bishops and the Dicastery for Evangelization,
brought together bishops from different parts of the world for a period of prayer, formation, dialogue and fraternity.
The programme seeks to strengthen newly appointed bishops as they assume the pastoral and administrative responsibilities
entrusted to them in their respective dioceses.
The formation included sessions led by senior Church leaders and addressed a range of issues relevant to episcopal ministry.
Strengthening Episcopal Ministry and Governance
The bishops received practical formation in diocesan administration, canonical responsibilities, Church tribunals, and financial
and patrimonial management. The sessions were intended to support the bishops in exercising their responsibilities with sound
pastoral and administrative stewardship.
Safeguarding and Protection
Another important area of formation was the protection and safeguarding of children and vulnerable persons. The bishops received
guidance on victim care, safeguarding responsibilities and the appropriate canonical procedures for dealing with delicta graviora,
referring to serious canonical offences.
Theology and Ecclesial Life
The programme also provided opportunities for reflection on synodal ecclesiology and contemporary pastoral challenges. Particular
attention was given to human dignity and the responsibility of the Church to accompany people amid rapid technological and cultural changes.
Accompanying Priests, Families and Communities
The formation further addressed the bishop's responsibility towards priests, families and the wider Christian community. Sessions covered
priestly formation and support, family accompaniment, and the need to address social divisions, including tribalism and regionalism,
which can affect the unity and pastoral life of communities.
Ecumenical and Interreligious Dialogue
The bishops also reflected on the Church's engagement with other Christian communities and followers of other religions. The programme
explored approaches to interreligious dialogue and pastoral responses to the challenges posed by sects and new religious movements.
Prayer, Pilgrimage and Fellowship
Spiritual activities formed an important part of the programme. The bishops participated in daily prayer, a Jubilee pilgrimage to Assisi,
Holy Mass at St Peter's Basilica, and the veneration of the relics of the Apostle Peter.
A significant highlight of the formation was a private audience with Pope Leo XIV, providing the newly appointed bishops with an opportunity
to meet the Holy Father and receive his encouragement for their ministry.
The gathering offered the newly appointed bishops an opportunity not only to deepen their understanding of episcopal ministry but also to strengthen their bonds of
fraternity with bishops serving the Church in different parts of the world. Through prayer, reflection and shared experiences, the formation course sought to prepare
them to serve their local Churches with faith, pastoral commitment and a spirit of communion with the universal Church.
