Gulu Archdiocese and the Acholi subregion are in mourning following the passing of Dr. Cyprian Opira.
Dr. Cyprian Opira, former Executive Director of Lacor Hospital, passed away on October 30, 2024, at 12:40 PM at Mulago National Referral Hospital after a prolonged illness.
His death has left a great impact in Acholi sub-region, where he dedicated his life to improving healthcare and serving the community with resolute commitment and compassion.
Dr. Opira began his career at Lacor Hospital as an intern in 1985 and eventually succeeded Dr. Mathew Lukwiya as the hospital's director.
His leadership and vision transformed the institution, positively influencing countless lives through his tireless efforts.
A memorial service was held in Kampala on November 1, 2024, at Our Lady of Africa in Mbuya. The burial is scheduled for Saturday, November 9, 2024, at St. Mary's Hospital, Lacor, in Gulu City, where he will be laid to rest alongside notable figures in the medical community, including Dr. Piero Corti, Dr. Lucille Corti, and Dr. Mathew Lukwiya.
On November 2, 2024, Dr. Opira's body was transported from Kampala to the Lacor Hospital mortuary in Gulu.
Bishop Sabino blessed his body as it arrived in Gulu from Kampala.
Memorial activities, including prayers, will take place at St. Mary's Hospital, Lacor. A vigil will be held at his family home in Bardege on November 8, 2024, prior to the burial.
