GANAL Faithful Urged to Pray for Lasting Peace in Apaa
PEACE WEEK, GANAL -
As the faithful across the GANAL dioceses (Gulu Archdiocese, Nebbi, Arua, and Lira Dioceses)
continue observing the GANAL Peace Week,
Rt.Rev.Sabino Ocan Odoki has called upon Christians and all people of goodwill to remain prayerful and
not forget the ongoing land conflict between the Madi and Acholi communities in the Apaa areas.
Speaking during a media interview on behalf of religious leaders, Bishop Sabino appealed to
both the Madi and Acholi communities to embrace meaningful and result-oriented dialogue as
soon as possible so that the matter may be resolved peacefully without further bloodshed.
The Apaa conflict is a longstanding land dispute involving the Madi and Acholi communities
in Northern Uganda, mainly centered around questions of land ownership and administrative boundaries.
Over the years, the conflict has led to loss of lives, displacement of families, destruction of property,
and recurring tensions between the two communities.
The Bishop described the continued loss of lives resulting from the conflict as deeply regrettable and painful,
noting that peace remains the only path towards healing and coexistence.
He further cautioned individuals believed to be fueling the conflict out of personal interest to desist and instead
prioritize the common good and peaceful coexistence of the two sister communities.
Bishop Sabino emphasized that peace, reconciliation, forgiveness, and unity are values that must guide the people during
this period of prayer and reflection.
He also expressed sincere gratitude to the Anglican Diocese of Northern Uganda in Gulu for the initiatives undertaken to
promote peace in the region. In a special way, he appreciated Bishop Godfrey Loum of Northern Uganda Diocese for his leadership
and continued advocacy through the Office of Justice and Peace and thanked the Coordinator of the Justice and Peace Office for
the invitation to participate in the interview and share reflections on peacebuilding and reconciliation.
