Bishop Sabino Ocan Odoki has decreed that a Diocesan Synod be held and preparations to begin in December 2017.This decree to convoke a Synod is in accordance with the law of the Church (cf. Can. 461, par. 1, Can. 462, par. 1). The Bishop made the decree during the annual pilgrimage to Lodonga Minor Basilica on the feast of Immaculate Conception of Mary.

The Synod shall be celebrated at the end of 2018 marking the 60th Anniversary of the Diocese of Arua under the theme “GROWING TOGETHER AS A FAMILY CHURCH: My mother and my brothers are those who hear God’s Word and put it into practice (Lk. 8:21).

According to Bishop Sabino the Diocesan Synod is an expression of the Church as the People of God. Its members are the faithful who are in communion with the Church, sharing in the threefold priestly, prophetic and kingly office of Christ, in a manner proper to each of them. Such a synod is an important instrument for the governing and renewal of a diocese, being “an assembly of selected priests and other members of Christ’s faithful of a particular Church which, for the good of the whole diocesan community, assists the Diocesan Bishop…” (Can. 460). He also commented that the diocesan synod is motivated by the need to review the past and to meet the current and future challenges of our Diocese.

In his remarks too, he said the moment has come to take again a comprehensive evaluation of the Diocese; the need not only look to the past, but also to the future with faith, hope and love. It is therefore incumbent on all, in communion with the Universal Church, to undergo self-renewal. With the help of God’s Holy Spirit, “...it is upon us in this 5th Diocesan Synod, to plan for the years ahead of us. We are to see together in what way we can most effectively and fruitfully carry on our mission of evangelization in the era of New Evangelization.”
